Best clubs over the past 5 years? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing the best clubs of the last 5 years. WRXer ‘cpayton’ kicks off the discussion saying:

“Have decided to get back into golf and will be in the DFW and DC area in a couple weeks. Looking to pick up some new-to-me clubs. But not at limited edition Miura type prices.

Current setup: Mavrik 9*, TM SLDR 3w/hybrid, Mizuno MP-18 MMC/SC/MB combo, Vokey SM5.

Suggestions?  And are the newer Vokeys overvalued? I’ve usually found success with TM woods and Japanese sticks. Thus, a newer Mizuno, maybe even Srixon, is worth a look. But some of those TM sticks look nice as well. (About a 10 handicap, SS 100-105)”

And our members have been sharing both their favorite clubs of the last 5 years and their recommendations in response.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • is1ander: “Cobra 3DP is probably one of the few innovations the past 5 years. MB/Tour combo would be nice. Srixon ZXi7, Titleist T100 are top shelf. Rors Protos Limited Edition are available to order for a few more days and then they’re gone.”
  • robbie91: “If you like TaylorMade, the QI10 driver and fairways are arguably some of the company’s best offerings of all time. For irons, any Srixon ZX7 iteration is worth a hit, if you get along with the sole grinds they can be like cheating. The TaylorMade CB irons are super solid if you want something a bit more traditional but they are also more demanding. If you want more forgiving, Ping I210s will likely go down as a GOAT set but I doubt you’ll like the clunkiness coming from what you have. P770 is a sleeper set if you are looking for some distance. There’s nothing wrong with irons you have though. Vokeys haven’t changed much so I wouldn’t worry about an upgrade there.”
  • Joelsim: “The Titleist GT1 range.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
