If you hit your 7-iron 157 yards would you switch to a head with greater ball speed? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been responding to an interesting dilemma faced by a WRXer. ‘LowAndLeft32’ lays out his issues as following:
“Getting older. Trying to figure out if blades should be replaced with a players or players distance type cavity head. Increasing 7-iron distance to ~170 yards instead of current 5-iron may help reduce stokes. Shorter club length may help tighten dispersion. Swing all out to try to keep distances up may be an hindrance. Any thoughts?”
And our members have been sharing their top tips and suggestions in response.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- hammergolf: “Zero interest in hitting irons further. Only interested in hitting them closer to the hole.”
- PuffyC: “Lofts and lengths are typically pretty consistent regardless of what number is stamped on the head so highly unlikely it would actually affect scores unless they simply fit you better. They might make you feel better when talking about your game tho so that’s worth something.”
- mikes919: “I went the other direction. Was playing GI irons and hitting my 7i 170ish. The problem was, every once in a while I would crush it 185 and totally overshoot the green (or worse, go into a hazard when I was trying to lay up). Switched to player’s CB’s and now my 7i goes 159 average carry. No distance surprises. Mishits come up predictably short. So I used to carry 5-GW and now I carry 4-PW. Doesn’t really matter what number is on the head as long as it goes the distance I want, and I can control it.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
