Have you needed to change equipment due to age?

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing changing equipment due to age. WRXer ‘dgarland’ kicks off the thread, saying:

“I’ve been playing equipment that requires a decent amount of speed for my entire golf life.  I will be 49 in about a month and I can still hit this stuff, but I can tell it takes a little bit more effort now.

My question is when did you or how do you know when to start changing up your equipment?

I’ve played driver, 3 wood, 2 hybrid, 4 hybrid for years but I just got a 5 wood and I’m looking at 7 woods.  Still play stiff shafts in everything because I have a fairly quick tempo.  I’m playing Srixon Zx7’s at the moment and they still perform well but the next time I’m in the market for irons I’m going to explore some higher launch, higher speed heads.”

And our members have been sharing their experiences and what has helped for them in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Old Tom Morris: “Tweaking things slightly as the years go by.  Top end of the bag includes lighter weight shafts.  I can still handle 130g shafts in wedges though. Introducing hybrids for long irons as clubhead speed is no longer suitable for 3 and 4 irons.”
  • fwilliam: “Due to elbow and shoulder issues, I switched from steel to graphite shafts at about age 60. Body is happier and no real change in outcomes.”
  • elwhippy: “2026 bag will feature softer shafted driver, fairway, and hybrids. 5 hybrid could be on the cards.”

I’m 55 and made the move to graphite shafts in my irons this year. Not for weight/swing speed, but playing x-stiff shafts 4x/week last years was taking a toll on my wrists and elbows. Ordered a ZXi5/7 combo set with graphites as soon as they were available and had no pain issues at all this year. Wish I’d done it sooner!

At 60 I upgraded my AP1s to mizuno hot metal Pros. The extra 15 yards has kept me comfortable up to 6400 yards or so, which means I get to stay on the white, blue tees a while longer.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
