How do you choose your coach?
In our forums, our members have been discussing the strategy behind choosing a golf coach. WRXer ‘Vpoli92’ kicks off the thread, saying:

- iacas: “Teaching is three things, IMO.1 Technical knowledge. 2. Communication. 3. Prioritization. Great instructors have all three. Competent ones have the first and are at least decent at the second. Do not waste your time with someone who doesn’t have the first. Ask around. Ask if you can observe a lesson or two. See who has a good track record. Don’t discount online lessons, whether single or subscription style. I’d avoid the spaced out single lessons every few months unless you’re really good at practicing. I’d look at a subscription or something that lets you check in weekly or bi-weekly for awhile (in person or online).”
- GoGoErky: “I research the person using any online reviews, talk to others to see who they use, have a conversation with the coach to see if we are a fit.”
- MK7Golf21: “One of the ways to find good instructors within driving distance was reaching out to good golfers on the top college golf team in my state. They usually had good ones to try out who they had worked with and helped get them to where they were.”
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.
“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
