Toulon unveils its latest Small Batch putter – Badlands

Published

on

Toulon Golf has today officially announced its latest Small Batch putter — Badlands.

Very near the geographic center of North America sits Badlands National Park in Southwestern South Dakota. As Toulon designed and developed Badlands, the brand sought symbols of center-ness. It was a center-shafted putter designed for center-face strikes with a name to symbolize this center.

The body shape for Small Batch Badlands was driven by a growing trend on tour. There have been many center-shafted putters in play but over the past few years they have been primarily mallets. Starting at the first event of the year, a center-shafted blade was used to win in Hawaii in record fashion. Per Toulon, that peaked their curiosity and led to many inquiries from Tour players and customers alike about the merits of such a design.

According to Toulon, the key to a design like Badlands lies first in designing the hosel and specifically how it enters the head and top line. After speaking with players, Toulon knew they needed to eliminate onset to create a full view of the ball from address.

Working on that first, they also decided that they would need to create a little bit of toe hang. By moving the hosel slightly heelward, they could greatly improve the look from address, helping to create the toe flow they wanted – about 30 degrees.

Badlands is a putter designed for players that want face awareness through the stroke and want to create a bit of arc. To create a softer feel, Badlands uses a new material – 316L Stainless Steel. A long-time favorite material used by many of the most renowned Swiss watch makers, 316L provided the first part of the sound and feel equation.

The second part was to dial in the more audible click Toulon sought. For that, they developed a new face mill pattern of a series of very shallow tool paths. The resulting visual shimmer effect helps bring up the sound and feel right into the area that they wanted.

The body design is a favorite Toulon, with Badlands beginning with inspiration from the brand’s Austin model. The classic wide cavity Dalehead style is designed to help to create visual space for the top line and center shaft design. Badlands invites the player to engage in a little toe flow.

Badlands features gold sole weights bringing the total weight to a modern 350 grams. Slow milled and lightly polished, the sole features an engraved eagle that oversees the area.

With a designed 2 degree draft angle, Badlands soles perfectly square allowing for a very simple alignment using both the top line and flange line.

The rest of the package includes the brand’s loved slow-milled Dark Chocolate finish over its new 316L stainless steel. Sunset orange, cream and a touch of gold aim to give Badlands the feel of a setting sun over the untamed land.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
