Turned up 3-wood vs turned down 5-wood – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing the merits of using a 3-wood turned up a few degrees vs a 5-wood turned down a few degrees. WRXer ‘Tmcg’ kicks off the thread with the question:
“Curious on thoughts and/or benefits of a 3-wood turned up a few degrees vs a 5-wood turned down. Would distance be similar, would one be easier to hit consistently?”
And our members have been having their say in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Tree Levino: “5-wood face will be quite open and 3-wood face will be quite close set up like this. 5-wood head is heavier and club is shorter, head is smaller. 3-wood head is lighter and head is bigger. Totally depends on your delivery and miss as to which will perform better.”
- Bye: “I think if you are looking for something specific, you may end up without what you are looking for with both options. I’ve tried every option, the best for me was a standard loft 3 wood with a 42.5” shaft. Swing weight the same as driver.”
- MauiCatIsFat: “I tried to do this with a HL 3W so I didn’t have to buy another club. The face is super closed and really weird to look at. I think its maybe something I could get used to but I decided to just put the burner bubble 5w back in the bag for now until I figure out what I want to do.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
