Spotted: TaylorMade goes zero torque with Spider 5K-ZT Prototype putter

Published

on

Zero-torque putters are the hottest thing in golf right now, and every company seems to be creating one. TaylorMade is the latest brand to get into the zero torque game with the new Spider 5K-ZT prototype putter that we spotted Jason Day testing out at the 2025 Arnold Palmer Invitational. This new putter looks to be pretty high-end, with a lot of visible milling marks throughout the body pieces.

From address, the shape looks similar to the rest of the TaylorMade Spider line with the flared out “wings” at the back of the head. A silver face section is paired to a black body, and then there is a blue sole plate to finish off the main part of the putter. Like most zero torque putters, the shaft is installed right behind the face and in the center of the body, giving a balance where the toe sits up and the face stays pointed toward the target throughout the stroke.

TaylorMade looks to be using its famous Pure Roll insert with horizontal grooves that produce better forward roll and less skidding. It is hard to be sure, but the Pure Roll insert looks to be the TPU version for a softer feel and more muted sound at impact. On the sole of the putter, you can see three weights, two near the face and one almost in the center of the putter for dialing in the head weight.

Unfortunately, TaylorMade hasn’t given us any details yet on this new Spider, but we’ll be keenly watching to see who else starts testing one of these flatsticks!

The Link.1 and Blad 1/2 both have no shaft lean and have torque.

Mezz’s DF2.1 and DF3 have shaft lean and are zero torque.

Not sure about the OZ, as I haven’t handled one.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
