How do you decide on new clubs? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing how they decide on new clubs. WRXer ‘uscheese’ kicks off the thread saying:
“About to buy everything but irons new and beyond price and brand loyalty what goes into your decision making process? I went to the local store yesterday and tried some drivers and Taylor Made and Callaway were both very similar as far as results go. Waiting on the Qi35 and Elyte to come out before making purchases.”
And our members have been responding with their individual process in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- PedronNiall: “Read and watch reviews, especially prior TXG, Cool Clubs, and anywhere that does consistent, detailed testing. Looking at feedback from players here. When we’re lucky enough, looking through the testing threads where a handful of WRxers get their hands on the latest and greatest and put it through the paces. Irons I’m usually fine with grabbing as long as the results have been good and the profile fits what I’ve liked before. Drivers and woods I hit before I buy.”
- Streuner: “I ususal do not buy anything in the beginning of the year. I may show up at some demo events and try out some of the new stuff. But I wait till the end of the season to buy. At that time the prices drops and real world experiences from people that I know are coming in.”
- djohnsonx: “Predominantly looks if we’re excluding price. Switched basically my whole bag to Cobra this year mostly because of looks (though the prices were right). When it comes to new clubs, I try to read through the marketing. At this point, the marketing claims far outpace performance gains. It sounds like you have the right idea though by going and hitting the new stuff before you decide.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
