Cobra announces DS-Adapt drivers with centerpiece FutureFit33 hosel technology

Published

on

Spotted on the PGA Tour at the Shriners Children’s Open, Cobra today announced its new DS-Adapt family of drivers is heading to retail.

What the company is calling its “fastest, most fittable metalwoods to date” will be available in four models: DS-Adapt LS, DS-Adapt X, DS-Adapt Max-K, and DS-Adapt Max-D.

Cobra DS-Adapt drivers: What’s new, key technology

FutureFit33 adjustable hosel system

No doubt the centerpiece of Cobra’s new drivers is the hosel technology — and the adjustability therein. What Cobra calls its FutureFit33 Adjustable Hosel System, the technology allows for 33 unique loft and lie settings, which can be adjusted independently. Music to the ears of ever-tinkering GolfWRXers!

“FutureFit33 is a true breakthrough in metalwood fitting,” said Jose Miraflor, VP of Product Architecture and Consumer Connections at Cobra Puma Golf. “Never before has any hosel system provided 33 unique loft and lie settings that can be adjusted so quickly and easily. 33 settings is more than four times our previous hosel system and more than double our nearest competitor.”

Per Cobra, all 33 settings can be quickly and easily adjusted, and the company’s sole geometry — SmartPad Technology — maintains a square clubface at address in all settings.

Progressive Aero shaping

Building off the original Darkspeed driver designs, Cobra again employs Progressive Aero shaping uniquely across the family.

For the DS-Adapt LS, the most dramatic shaping is employed in the form crown height, a raised rear aft, and heel aero shaping. Additionally, at 445cc, the profile is more compact.

In the 460cc DS-Adapt X, weight is balanced between the front and back of the driver head in a traditional profile for a blend of forgiveness and speed.

The DS-Adapt Max-K is Cobra’s foray into the ultra-forgiving 10K MOI space. Not surprisingly, the club’s stretched 460cc profile is the largest in the lineup.

Cobra’s draw-biased offering, the DS-Adapt Max-D, is designed with a low, heel-biased CG (center of gravity).

Adaptive Weighting

Working in concert with the Progressive Aero shaping is Cobra’s Adaptive Weighting system, which relies on the latest iteration of the company’s PWR-Bridge weight — uniquely designed for each model and loft.

Weight details for each model, per Cobra, are below.

“In the LS, the 9-degree clubhead features a redesigned, slightly curved PWR-BRIDGE weight positioned low and as forward as possible for low spin and maximum ball speed. The 10.5-degree LS features no PWR-BRIDGE and repositions the discretionary weight to move the CG slightly back for a bit more spin and higher launch, allowing for a more playable version of the low-spinning LS model.

“Similarly, the DS-ADAPT X 9-degree clubhead features a forward PWR-BRIDGE weight for reduced spin and speed, while the 10.5-degree features no PWR-BRIDGE, with discretionary weight moved to the back for added launch and forgiveness.

“The DS-ADAPT MAX-K features all discretionary weight in the back of the clubhead, maximizing forgiveness and consistency.

“The MAX-D models are designed with all discretionary weight in the heel for increased slice correction and exceptional stability.”

External weights

  • DS-Adapt LS and DS-Adapt X drivers feature moveable exdternal weights as well.
  • LS: Three weight ports. Two front, one back. Two 3-gram weights. One 10-gram weight.
X: One back weight. One front weight.

Max-K has a 10-gram fixed weight in the rear of the club for maximum MOI. Max-D has a 10-gram fixed weight in the heel for maximum draw bias.

With the DS-Adapt drivers, Cobra also serves up a lightweight carbon crown, lightweight titanium frame, and a larger forged face insert with H.O.T. Face Technology across the lineup.

I guess you’ll have to have an engineering degree from MIT to even swing this new driver!

    Looks great though.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
