Adam Scott says he’d be ‘selling hot dogs’ if it weren’t for his short game
Adam Scott has been one of the best drivers on tour for years, but it’s an area of his game that has given him significant issues to begin 2021.
The Australian turned heads last month when he was pictured with an $800 Korean AutoFlex shaft, which he put into play at Torrey Pines for the Farmers Insurance Open.
Scott notched a top-10 finish that week in California, but it was in spite of his driving, where he lost strokes off the tee, primarily because he hit just 42% of his fairways.
The AutoFlex remained in his bag for a T38 finish at the Riviera, where his accuracy off the tee dropped to 33%, and then again at the WGC-Workday, where the Aussie dropped a massive 5.2 strokes to the field off the tee.
This led to the end of the AutoFlex experiment for Scott, who last week at TPC Sawgrass put a Fujikura Ventus Red back in his driver. However, the change didn’t have the desired effect, with the 40-year-old losing another 5.2 strokes to the field off the tee, despite being the second-longest off the tee at the event.

Speaking ahead of this week’s Honda Classic, Scott described his long game as currently not good enough while heaping praise on his short game, saying:
“My short game is fantastic at the moment. I mean, for sure the best consistently it’s ever been, which is fortunate, otherwise I’d be selling hot dogs, not playing golf if I didn’t have one.
But I’m not really where I want to be with my long game. I can sit here and bore you with details why, but it’s just the fact is it’s just not good enough. In the big picture of things with Augusta in mind, I think if I can make some progress this week, I’ve got two weeks of practice which I really, really need to be ready for Augusta, and I still believe I can be.”
Scott is in action today at PGA National, and we’ll be keeping an eye on whether he can improve his form with the big stick and what shaft he opts for.
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.
“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
