What GolfWRXers are saying about the best ‘oldies but goodies’ fairway woods

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing their favorite fairway woods which fall under the ‘oldies but goodies’ category. WRXer ‘Dufner’s Waggle has tried a multitude of fairway woods over the years, but says

“In the end….the club that has withstood the test of time and outlasted all others is a Ping G20 4w (16.5*) with a Diamana Flowerband Whiteboard 73X, 1/2” under standard loaded with a little lead tape to get the swing weight back up. There’s nothing pretty about it AT ALL. It’s big and ugly and has the half-moon alignment marks on it.

It’s not the kind of thing I’d ever pick up off the rack or gravitate towards. None of the tech some of the models above have, but man it is just so stinkin’ good. “

And our members have been putting forward their picks in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Hougz79: “I gamed a Cally Warbird 4W for a few years after HS, loved that thing. Had the Memphis 10 “uniflex” steel shaft. Definitely required a smooth swing. Titleist 909F2 with a Diamana 83X WhiteBoard stayed in my bag from release to 2016. Absolutely loved that thing. “
  • Willian70: “Callaway X Hot Pro 5 wood 19* degrees. Still in the bag might not ever leave.”
  • leftymatt: “I have a Great Big Bertha Ti 4 wood with the Warbird sole (’96 or ’97 I think?) that I inherited a while ago and I just can’t bring myself to get rid of it. I mess with the top clubs in the bag more than anything, and every time I bring this thing back out, I start to think of how much money I could have saved if I just let it be. It has the original firm flex UL graphite shaft that has worked well. Like another post above, it forces me to smooth out the swing a bit – probably a good thing anyway.”
  • BlkNGld: “It’s ancient by the standards here, but I’ve yet to find something that’s threatened my XHot Pro 4w.”
  • Golfingfanatic: “Still using a TaylorMade M2 Deep Face 16.5°. The best fairway wood in the last 10 years IMO.”That I got it through the goodwill of GolfWRX and Callaway and its longevity, make it my all-time bang for buck champ.

There’s a 12 year old Sonartec NP-99 16 degree 4 wood with an Oban Devotion shaft in my bag that’s going to stay there until either it breaks or I do.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
