Should fairway woods be setup more like your driver or hybrids? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing how they setup their fairway woods. WRXer ‘Vater’ kicks off the conversation saying:
“To the extent that you have similar shaft profiles through any of your clubs with a graphite shaft, are your fairway woods more similar to your driver or your hybrids? In terms of shaft make/model, flex, weight, etc.?
For example, does your 5W have a shaft more similar to what’s in your driver or what’s in your hybrid?
I’m thinking of getting a new shaft in my 7W and feel like it makes more sense to be similar to my 5H rather than my driver.”
And our members have been sharing their thoughts and setups in response.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Rbsiedsc: “Driver and Mini I go low low tip stiff. In my fairway and uw I am more handle stiff and slightly softer in tip. Although for me, I feel like I get too much height on fairways and lose some distance.”
- Roejye: “I would say it’s probably more like my hybrids, but it’s not through planning. I have stock shafts in my 5w and hybrids, I think they’d be considered middle/middle. Meanwhile in my drivers I have aftermarket shafts, one being low/low reg and one high/low stiff. My bag is pretty much a mishmash let’s see how this performs and if it fits.”
- i15Flyer: “Might not be the answer you’re looking for, but the shaft should be what’s right for the fairway wood and what your trying to do with it, regardless of whether it’s more like a driver or hybrid. I play a low launch low spin driver shaft, then a mid launch mid spin shaft for my 5-wood with a 3-wood length shaft, then a lower launching/kind of low/mid spin 7-wood shaft, since the loft of the 7 is what’s putting the ball in the air.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
