Switch to low bounce wedge? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing the merits of switching to a lower bounce wedge. WRXer ‘DavisGoLo’ kicks off the conversation saying:
“What has everyone’s experience been switching into a lower bounce lob wedge?
I’ve played a Vokey 60° M Grind for years and am considering trying either the T Grind or the low bounce K. I play a pretty wide variety of course conditions, so I’m curious how these lower bounce options hold up when things get softer.
I know they’re generally better off firm, tight lies, but do they become too demanding in softer turf or bunkers? For those who made a similar switch, did you regret it, or did the extra versatility around the greens outweigh the downside?”
And our members have been sharing their thoughts and experiences in response.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- ShortGolfer: “My new course has really lush grass so I thinking of swapping out wedges depending on which course I play. High bounce for the new course and the 56M grind for the old course. I plan to play both at least once a week.”
- TightFade: “Unless you play courses that are super tightly cut around the greens, that lower bounce may not be great. Close leading edge and soft conditions…dig. Want a treat? Go 58M and loft it up to 59 or 60…”
- stratgolf: “I really struggle with digging on softer/wetter courses, I find it easier to just open the face on tighter lies.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
