Lead Tape Hall of Fame: Why Scott Piercy is a first ballot inductee
The Hall of Fame, where the greats go for the enshrinement of their great career and memorable moments. Make no mistake, this goes beyond the arena as well. Welcome to the first installment of the Lead Tape Hall of Fame. Here we cover the greats that have slabbed up their clubs with weighted tape! They have earned their right into the Lead Tape Hall of Fame with years building trust into their tools cemented by great shots and results.
Some of the credentials we look at are the length of time the player has used lead tape, their story of why they use it, and the way the tape is applied for a sense of style and bravado. It’s a highly scientific process!

Our first ballot Lead Tape Hall of Fame member is Scott Piercy. Scott turned professional in 2000, and his first event on the PGA Tour was in 2003 at the Wachovia Championship at Quail Hollow. Piercy has won four times on tour. From the Korn Ferry Tour to the PGA Tour, Scott has teed it up in over 420 events.

The work of Aaron Dill (@vokeywedgerep), customizing the lead tape with a hole-puncher on Scott Piercy’s irons for the “fish scale” design in 2017.
Scott’s clubs have been featured on Lead Tape Chronicles since the beginning of the page in 2018. His clubs can be traced back to GolfWRX since his start on the PGA Tour. There has always been the lead tape. Piercy opts for relatively full coverage on the back of his blade irons. Seen here in 2025 using the Titleist 680 model. His caddie, Phil Reedy, passed along images in December 2024 featuring the logo’d Titleist lead tape, which caused a little stir online when posted, as it was one of the first times the public had seen it.
I recently spoke with Piercy and learned why he has the lead tape on his clubs. He likes his irons playing at the swing weight of D4. “No weights in the hosels. And midsize grip. Both of which adds more tape…” Piercy said. He plays True Temper Dynamic Gold shafts, saying, “I go between x100’s and 120g x100’s. Currently in 120g at D5 because it’s a little stiffer part.”

All of these factors, with the midsize grips, the weight of the shafts, not having the shaft tip weighting adjustment to acquire the desired swing weight, lead tape is the perfect addition. With this, Scott can go for his personal feel of how a club should perform in his hands. That feel includes the most important feel at impact. Piercy likes the club to have a “kick” feeling at impact. This provides superior feedback on ball striking and how the clubs feel in your hand during a tournament round.
This purpose for the lead tape stems from the need for a D4 swing weight, no tip weighting used in the club building process, capped off by midsize grips. Midsize grips will make the club head feel lighter at address with the heavier grip.
Thank you to Scott Piercy for taking a moment for sharing what makes the clubs your own! To see the clubs throughout the years and see what is trusted when it’s time to get the tee in the ground and compete.
This is the first induction into the Lead Tape Hall of Fame.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
