Hear me out. Why I’m thinking of having a 3 driver setup

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been reacting to one WRXer pondering whether to play a three driver setup. WRXer ‘DTorres’ lays out his dilemma in full to kick off the thread, saying:

“I’m genuinely thinking about having a 3 driver bag soon and removing my 6 iron. I’m looking for suggestions and comments. Hear me out. For 30 years of golf in my 37 years of existence I have been a power golfer, a bomber or maybe just a gear obsessed seeker of speed. I play a John Daly/ Craig Stadler esc style of golf where ideally I’d like to be a full swing tee shot to a wedge away no matter the hole.

Recently I have been tinkering with making a driver I can just let loose on knowing it will find a fairway at 300 carry yards. In that quest I ended up with a lot of drivers and shafts and picked up some speed I had lost. Consequently the gap between the top of my bag has extended and I’m rarely using my middle irons.

Currently this is my full swing gapping

  • Driver(6*): 325 carry/ low spin
  • 3 wood(13*):280 carry/ mid spin
  • 3 Utility(17*): 250 carry/ low spin
  • 4 iron: 225 carry/middle spin
  • 5 iron: 210 carry/middle spin
  • 6 iron: 198 carry/middle spin
  • 7 iron: 188 carry/middle spin
  • 8 iron: 167 carry/middle spin
  • 9 iron: 155 carry/ middle spin
  • PW: 145 carry/ middle spin
  • 50: 135 carry/ high spin
  • 55:  115 carry/ high spin
  • 60: 100 carry/ high spin
  • Putter: hopefully 3 feet

Thinking about this:

  • Driver(5*): 335 carry/ low spin
  • Driver(8*):315 carry/ mid spin
  • Mini Driver (13*):285 carry/ high spin
  • 3 Utility(17*): 250 carry/ low spin
  • 4 iron: 225 carry/middle spin
  • 5 iron: 210 carry/middle spin
  • 7 iron: 188 carry/middle spin
  • 8 iron: 167 carry/middle spin
  • 9 iron: 155 carry/ middle spin
  • PW: 145 carry/ middle spin
  • 50: 135 carry/ high spin
  • 55:  115 carry/ high spin
  • 60: 100 carry/ high spin
  • Putter: hopefully 3 feet”

And our members have been sharing their thoughts in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • BowMain42: “Why not?  Try it!”
  • Jc0: “No harm in trying it, but I would suggest running some simulated rounds through your head and ask your self how much you’re actually going to hit the middle driver and if closing the gapping at your wedge game would serve you better.”
  • st1800e: “Adjust the lofts in some of the irons, leaving the 6 out,  to get even gapping between what you’re using.”

It usually doesn’t work. The variations on each driver will be noticed by the player and a favorite will emerge that feels and performs better. I tried it and i picked the one that was the most consistent.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
