What Jason Day is saying about his prototype Avoda irons
Earlier this week, we spotted Jason Day with prototype Avoda irons in the bag ahead of the Utah Championship. Fast forward to day one of the competition, and the Australian has indeed replaced his TaylorMade P7CB irons with the 3D-printed protos from the upstart iron manufacturer.
Following his opening-round 68, Day discussed the new irons in his post-round press conference. And because this is GolfWRX and you want all the details, we’ll present his quote in full below.
“Yeah, hadn’t been hitting my irons too — like actually hadn’t been hitting my irons great at all. I decided to have a chat to my coach, Colin, and say, do you reckon we can go out and just maybe have a look?
“I don’t have an OEM sponsor so I’m a free agent there so I can go out and see what the best of the best is. Stumbled across Avoda in a way that like obviously Bryson had some success with it. He won with the Avoda irons at the U.S. Open at Pinehurst. But I just told my coach, just have a chat to the guys, see what they think.
“He got off the phone and called me and he goes, man, in all the years I’ve been doing this, I’ve never come across the guys the way they explained everything.
“So we met in person. Did a lot of 3D printing of the iron head the way that I wanted to look at it. Obviously it’s — there is a process there. After this week we’re obviously going to get back together and see what needs to kind of be improved.”
Interestingly, Day indicated he plans to continue prototyping his preferred design with the company (which certainly appears, currently, to be a blended CB and MB set).
“I think currently right now I would like to see a little bit — a tiny bit more offset. Try and get a little bit more turn. If that has a little bit more offset it will actually elevate the ball a little bit more in the air, which would be nice.”

Day also said he put lighter iron shafts in play, switching from True Temper Dynamic Gold X7 136-gram shafts to KBS TGI Tour Graphite 110-gram shafts. He also added larger JumboMax JMX Zen Lite grips to his build.
Day confirmed his prototype irons are curved/built with bulge and roll, similar to Bryson DeChambeau’s Avoda models. Unlike DeChambeau, however, Day is not opting for a single-length build.
We’ll continue following the saga of Jason Day’s irons, as the saga will surely be appointment viewing for club junkies for the foreseeable future.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
