Bryson DeChambeau adds prototype LA Golf irons to his bag at LIV Golf Virginia

Published

on

It is no secret that Bryson DeChambeau is a singular individual when it comes to equipment. His massive clubhead speed has fueled his desire for equipment that suits the needs of a player with a clubhead speed of around 130 MPH. Bryson’s irons are also the most unique on tour as they use single-length shafts along with bulge and roll on the faces.

Golf.com’s Johnny Wunder broke the news that Bryson is continuing his bulge-and-roll irons experiment with prototype LA Golf irons, deviating from the Avoda irons that caught the golf equipment world’s eye at the 2024 Masters. DeChambeau is expected to put the “LA Golf BAD V3-W” irons (so-called by LIV’s Matt Vincenzi) in play at LIV Golf Virginia.

Bulge and roll isn’t a new thing in the world of golf equipment, but usually it is talked about in drivers and woods. Roll is the vertical curvature, from top to bottom of the face, that helps with shots hit low and high on the face. This curvature will help with shots struck high on the face launch higher, and lower the launch of shots hit lower on the face. Bulge curves from heel to toe and helps create a gear effect on the ball to reduce hooking and slicing. Bryson previously worked closely with Avoda Golf to produce a set of prototype irons that had this technology built into them. Versions of these LA Golf irons have been seen in Bryson’s bag recently, but until now he was just testing them.

The new LA Golf irons have bulge and roll, but they are slightly different than some of his previous irons. As reported by Wunder, these LA Golf irons have less face curvature down in the heel in order to reduce some of the ball movement he would experience on heel strikes. DeChambeau’s miss is a fade that spins too much and comes up short of the yardage he would like. Bryson was extremely happy with the mishit performance of the new LA Golf irons, as those shots were flying in the windows that he likes. There is also a large tungsten weight out in the toe that is attached with two hex screws. Tungsten weighting out there is used to stabilize the head and slow down the toe rotation during the swing.

As usual, Bryson is definitely doing something different in order to play his best golf. He doesn’t seem to care what the equipment trends are or go by what other players are finding success with. Bryson forges his own path and seeks to help equipment companies create the best gear for his game, and it is always exciting to see where it goes. We’ll be paying close attention to how this latest chapter plays out.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
