LA Golf releases new Gold Series wood shafts

Published

on

The most well-known shaft from LA Golf right now is the P Series putter shaft, as we have seen a lot of them in play on professional tours. In fact, Jake Knapp just won with one in his putter at the Grant Thornton Invitational this past weekend.

Golfers may not be as familiar with the rest of the high-performance shafts LA Golf has to offer, and that lineup just expanded with the new Gold Series wood shafts.

The big story with the Gold Series is the addition of boron to the shaft’s material list. If you look on the periodic table you will see boron occupying the fifth spot, between beryllium and carbon. Boron is a dark metal that was created by cosmic ray spallation and supernovas. Owing to that origin story, it shouldn’t surprise you that boron a pretty rare element that is used primarily with carbon fiber in the aerospace industry. Boron is used with carbon fiber because it has a great ability to compress while carbon does not.

How does this become part of a golf shaft? And why? The engineers over at LA Golf created a design that weaves a proprietary boron alloy layer through the entire length of the shaft to improve stability and strength. This use of boron, combined with LA Golf’s 16-Sided Mandrel Construction should offer golfers extreme stability and consistency no matter what weight or flex shaft fits their swing the best.

LA Golf also manufactures its own prepreg composite fibers to ensure high quality and a better feel. If you are looking for a shaft with a higher launch and mid spin the Gold Series could be an option for you. The Gold Series shaft profile is a very stiff handle section, a stiff mid section, and a soft tip for players who might have a slightly faster tempo but need added launch for optimizing their launch conditions.

The LA Golf Gold Series is available now in 45g, 55g, 65g, and 75g weights and flexes from women’s all the way to Tour X-stiff.

Pricing for the Gold Series shafts is $349.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
