What was your number one equipment acquisition and/or change for 2024? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing their biggest acquisition and/or change for 2024. WRXer ‘RPMzz’ kicks off the thread sharing both:

Acquisition

Launch Monitor. (Rapsodo MLM2Pro + Outdoor hitting pad & net)

  • This device has easily transformed my golf game. In my backyard, day or night, I can hit balls with instant feedback & meaningful data. I can practice partial shots at the range & use video replay to see what a “10-o’clock” feeling actually looks like. I can make adjustments to my swing or setup to see how that impacts whatever flight I’m looking for. I can bring the LM to the local range @3500′ or to the club in the mountains @6550’+ and see how my numbers change at altitude/temp. It really is the most incredible piece of golf equipment I own.
  • (Disclaimer: Software/app bugs drove me crazy for many sessions across many months, but the app is finally behaving itself as of late October.)
  • I will now always own a LM & am considering an upgrade from the Rapsodo in 2025.

Change

  1. Flatter Lies. (Irons/Wedges, reconsidering my WTF)
    • Most OEMs put my height/WTF (5’9″/~32″) at 0″ to -.5″ length, 0 to -2* lie. My swing coach had me choking down 0.5″ on standard length, standard lie clubs. Pairing a high launching shaft with a high launch design SGI iron head gave me tremendous toe hooks when adding in a little EE. I changed to a minimal offset hollow-bodied iron head & stiffer mid-launch mid-spin shaft profile & immediately saw an improvement in my ball-striking and a reduction in the hook miss. I had lies adjusted to a .5* progression @-2 flat and saw the inside launching miss on a good strike virtually disappear. I can’t exclude the other changes I made, but confidence in my start line on a good strike has made a world of difference to my golf game. I’m now generally matching my swing intentions with shot shape which is all I can ask for from a full swing.
    • It has been a revelation to hit a wedge & have it travel straight where I was aiming instead of 1.5-3* inside. I tried a PW->-1* GW=SW=LW & now am using PW=GW -> -1* SW=LW setup & my approach shots haven’t been better.”

And our members have been doing the same in our forums.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • BombinJim: “Artisan wedge fitting and wedges for my PW, SW, and LW. Only got them in October so really looking forward to next season.”
  • RoverTiger: “My Dynacraft Prophet Muscle Blades have been absolute revelations for my game. Unreal performance for the price. With a couple of weeks to go in 2024, my new (to me) Maltby KE4 TC Max driver has a chance to jump into a tie for #1.”
  • JMB3: “I also moved to heavier shafts across the board, which helped my ball striking and dispersion.  I wish I had made that move years earlier.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
