Cobra launches DS-Adapt irons

Published

on

Seeking to create “the ultimate combination of speed, distance, and forgiveness,” Cobra today announced the launch of its game-improvement irons for 2025: Cobra DS-Adapt, Cobra DS-Adapt Max, and Cobra DS-Adapt Max women’s irons.

“Cobra has long been a leader in game improvement irons, but the new DS-Adapt family represents a major breakthrough in both performance and fitting,” said Jose Miraflor, VP of Product Architecture and Consumer Connections at Cobra Puma Golf of the successors to the company’s Darkspeed irons. “We have two models that can fit a massive group of players with varying swing speeds, all of whom are looking for maximum distance, exceptional forgiveness, and optimal overall performance.”

Cobra DS-Adapt irons: Key technology

Foam microsphere-filled hollow-body construction with improved face flexibility for high ball speed across the face and pleasant sound/feel.

Cobra engineers repositioned weight within the PWR-Bridge weighting system to lower the DS-Adapt irons CG (center of gravity) for ease of launch.

360 Speedshell face: Cobra features its largest-to-date face cup design in the DS-Adapt irons, which extends across the full sole and toe areas of the club. It’s paired with an internal speed channel as well for additional face flexing.

Add in H.O.T. face…According to the company, 360 Speedshell plus Highly Optimized Topology face yields a 23 percent increase in face flex at impact. Translation: More speed, higher launch, greater distance.

TECFLOTM construction: Cobra engineers crafted different designs in the long, mid, and short irons to match the needs of each style of club. Ease of hitting in the mid and long irons is the goal, while control in the short irons and wedges is the focus.

More specifically, 4 through 7-irons are hollow and feature foam microspheres and 360 Speedshell faces. 8-PW are hollow and microsphere-filled, but do not include 360 Speedshell. Wedges are hollow but contain neither technology to deliver a more traditional wedge feel and capabilities around the green.

A word on DS-Adapt Max…

Designed for higher-handicap golfers, DS-Adapt Max features a larger, slightly oversized profile — thicker topline, longer blade, more offset. Additionally, lofts for the DS-Adapt Max are two degrees weaker and the sole is wider.

More granularly of the performance differences between the iron models, Cobra says, “When tested against the standard DS-ADAPT irons, the MAX model produced approximately 1.6° higher launch, 550 rpm more spin, 2.4 yards higher peak trajectory, 2° steeper descent angles, and 8 more yards of draw bias.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
