#TigerTuesdays Top 5 all-time shots in Chicago

Published

on

With the PGA Tour heading to Chicago for the BMW Championship this week, I could draw some Tiger/MJ comparisons—but I won’t. Tiger has had quite the run in the city of Chicago and has more than enough memorable moments to draw from.

Here is my top-5 list…and of course the clubs he used to pull each shot off.

#5 Par putt on the 17th hole (Medinah CC) – Final round of the 1999 PGA Championship

*at this point, TW was still trying to capture major title #2 and with a hard-charging Sergio Garcia nipping at his heels, who knows what happens if Tiger misses this one.

Club Used: Scotty Cameron by Titleist Newport 2 GSS (Version #1 with white script) 35 Inches, PingMan BlackOut Grip

(3:00 mark)

#4 2nd shot into the par-5 7th hole (Medinah CC) – Final round of 1999 PGA Championship

*after a huge drive on the long 617 yards par-5 7th, TW hits a high slicing 2-iron from 261 to set up a birdie.

“This might be the greatest shot I have ever seen if it carries”

  • CBS On Course Commentator David Feherty

Club used: (2) Titleist 681 (TW Grind) with True Temper Dynamic Gold X100, 20 degrees, 39.5 length, D4 SW, Golf Pride BCC

#3 2nd shot into the par-4 11th (Medinah CC) – Final round of the 2006 PGA Championship

*he was already cruising along in the final round but to add insult to injury, Tiger hits this 8-iron shot outta the thick rough to lead to another birdie.

Club Used: (8) Nike Forged TW with True Temper Dynamic Gold X100, 41 degrees loft, 36.5 length, D4 SW, Golf Pride BCC

(21:45 mark)

#2 2nd shot into the par-5 7th hole (Medinah CC) – First round of the 2006 PGA Championship

*having only recently added the 5 wood to the bag, this majestic 5-wood into the long par-5 7th sent a message early that no one was touching him that week.

Club Used: Nike T40 5T  (19) with Mitsubishi Chemical Diamana Blue Board 103X, 41.75 inches, D3, Golf Pride BCC

(1:01 mark)

#1 2nd shot into the par-5 6th hole (Olympia Fields CC) – Second round 2003 U.S. Open

*no explanation needed here…this is just ridiculous. 3-wood slice from 247 into the fan to 20 feet.

Club Used: Titleist 970 (15) with True Temper Dynamic Gold X100 tipped to length, 42.75 inches, D4, Golf Pride BCC

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
