Cobra unveils new King MIM Black wedges
Cobra Golf has unveiled its latest addition to the MIM family: King MIM Black Wedges.
The King MIM Black wedges are a fully Metal-Injection-Molded (MIM) 304 stainless steel head construction featuring a glare-reducing QPQ (Quench Polish Quench) black finish.
Included in the new King MIM black wedge release is the first-ever MIM one-length offering, available exclusively in black in 56 and 60 degrees of loft in the Versatile Grind.

Speaking on the introduction of the King MIM black wedges, Tom Olsavsky, Vice President of R&D for Cobra Golf stated
“When we introduced MIM Wedges last year, it marked a steep change in the way wedges were manufactured. Since then, we have received requests from better players asking for the type of black finish that is preferred on Tour. The new QPQ finishing process allows us to deliver this option while maintaining soft, consistent performance for a wide variety of shots, now with a wider variety of grind options.”

As a reminder, each wedge is built using a mixture of 304 stainless steel metal powder, which is then heated and injected into a mold. Using a sintering process, the metal is heated to a higher temperature than forging (1340°C vs. 1200°C), designed to provide a smoother grain flow structure versus forged and cast wedges as well as maximizing the soft feel.
The King MIM Wedge family is the first in golf to utilize a fully robotic polishing process where the robot is pre-programmed to polish each wedge to exact specifications—designed to reduce the variability found in the traditional manual hand-polishing process.

This fully automated process eliminates variance in head weight and thickness and bids to provide golfers more precise grind shapes and more repeatable bounce in each wedge.

The additions feature a fully CNC milled face designed to maximize surface roughness and deliver precise lofts and groove shapes to help players optimize trajectory and spin performance.

The groove shapes on the wedges are CNC milled in a bid to optimize performance for each wedge loft, while the weaker lofts feature wider, shallower grooves. The stronger lofts contain narrower, deeper grooves designed to deliver consistent spin from wedge to wedge.
The new King MIM black wedges arrive in three different grind options: Versatile, WideLow, and Classic.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
