Forum Thread of the Day: “Best players irons within budget?”
Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from 1221 is on the hunt for new players irons within budget. Stressing the need for clubs that aren’t too old, our members help 1221 out with their suggestions on the best moderately priced players irons currently on the market.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- JoeFrigo: “Check out Sub70 Golf. I played the 639mb all year and loved them. Depending on your setup, a brand new iron set costs under $600. I honestly would put them up there in feel against anything. Even though I just got fit last month for the Mizuno’s I have now, I hate the fitted shaft in there, and I’m thinking of going back to the sub70’s.”
- dmeeksDC: “A bunch of good ones listed already on which I concur, especially the Srixon 700 series and TaylorMade 770 if you want a true forged club all the way through the bag. Not important to me. If it is shape and size you are focused on, and some elastomers and/or hollow heads are fine to make long iron life a little easier, the Pings i200 are great and so are the Ben Hogans (I prefer the PTX over the PTX Pro, which is not really a ‘Pro’ design.) If you like compact, the PTX certainly are, surprisingly so compared to others. How affordable do you want to go? Nike Vapor Pros and Vapor Pro Combo are both strong choices as players irons. If you look at what PXG and TM are doing will filled heads, a lot of that technology can be found in those Nike VPC heads with the Injected RZN polymer, and they perform really well. Look great from address. Happy hunting!”
- Whit1969: “Going to be hard to beat JPX 900 or 919s especially when you pick them up in fantastic condition for $350 to $600 depending on how many irons in the set you want.”
- Bladesonly72: “Hands down the Adams pro-black MB or the satin or PVD black Mb2’s.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
