Golf Pride Tour Velvet Align grips (2018 PGA Show Day 2)

Published

on

Golf Pride currently offers its Align technology in its second most popular grip style, the MCC, and in the MCC Plus4 compound. Now, Golf Pride will offer Align technology in its most popular grip, and statistically the most popular grip on Tour… the Tour Velvet.

At a given PGA Tour event, at least 50 percent of golfers use a Golf Pride Tour Velvet grip, according to the company. Also, about one-third of the players in a Tour event will be playing “reminder,” or ribbed, grips. Some Tour players who use a Tour Velvet with a rib, however, say the rib is not pronounced enough, according to Golf Pride.

Not anymore.

Align technology uses a micro-diamond texture (the red portion) that’s made from the same material as cap stock (the butt-end portion of the grip). That makes the “rib” feel much more pronounced. Additionally, the Tour Velvet Align uses an 8 percent softer compound that not only makes the grip feel softer, but also enhances the difference in feel between the rib and the rest of the grip.

The white portion of the grip is called a flex channel that allows the rib portion to protrude even further when the grip is put on a shaft. The end result is a Tour Velvet that has a more differentiable rib section than ever before; this will benefit players who want to feel the grip in their hands in the same spot every time, says Golf Pride.

Tour Velvet Align grips are set to hit retail on April 30.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
