The Rickie Fowler Effect: Puma expands line of high-top golf shoes

Published

on

High-tops for golf? Many an eyebrow was raised by golfers when Rickie Fowler began wearing Puma’s TitanTour Ignite Hi-Top golf shoes last year, but when the shoes came to retail many golfers had a different reaction — they bought them.

The success of Rickie’s shoes has led Puma to expand its line of high-top spikes, which now includes junior golf shoes ($100). Grown-ups can now get their shoes in two new colorways (black/white, white/orange) to go along with the original white/black shoe for $200 each.

“The response to my hi-tops has been overwhelmingly positive, and I’m excited that Puma is introducing these shoes to junior golfers,” Fowler said in a Puma Golf press release. “Puma Golf’s Hi-Tops are my favorite shoes to wear on course – they allow me to bring my style and personality to the links yet still provide the stability and comfort I need to perform at my best.”

Just imagine how many junior golfers are going to be asking for these this holiday season.

Is it just me or do these look more like circa ’93 hiking boots with the suede tops then actual high tops?

Patent leather buckles with metal trim…. on an athletic style shoe? Looks like it came straight off a woman’s handbag??? Just seems like a couple different clashing styles in one product. Not sure who is actually going buy these on this side of the pond anyway.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
