Strange shaft setups that work – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing “strange” shaft setups that work. WRXer ‘isgerrior’ kicks off the conversation with his contender, saying:

“Been tinkering a bit this spring and have come up with a strange hybris setup for the top end of my bag.  I game a G425 5 hybrid with a regular flex shaft, alta shaft, and a G425 4hybrid lofted down with a stiff shaft, Paderson KINETIXx.

The 5 is fantastic, in that its always a cut, high flight, carries 205 and just sits.  The 4 is a super penetrating ball flight, strait flight and 220 carry with some roll 230 total-ish.  Seems odd, having the regular flex as all my other shafts are stiff, but it really gaps well and is super versatile for my game. My 3 wood and driver are the top end of the bag.

Anyone else have strange shaft setups that work for them?”

And our members have been sharing their thoughts and own shaft setups in response.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • DE-ILLINI: “Play what works.  It sounds like you found something that fits a need in your bag.  I am sure there are others here that have found similar unusual set up that just work for them.”
  • Mr.Peabody: “My Driver SS is 120 and I have X-Stiff Ventus TR Blue+ shafts in my mini driver and fairway woods.  I have MMT 125TX shafts in my irons.  All of that tracks until……I have a Cobra King-Tec 5 hybrid with a 75 regular flex KBS TGI shaft.  I have no idea why it works, it just does.  I tinkered with stiffer shafts, but it made the club lose some of its magic.  For a while I was playing two 5 hybrids!  I had the Cobra 5H turned down and a PING G440 5H with an Alta Blue shaft (stiff flex) on standard loft.  The Cobra was playing at 200 yards and the PING was playing as a high flying, easy to hit 180 yard club.  My dad needed the PING 5H more than me so I gave it to him.  Otherwise I would still be playing the same setup. Another oddity is that I play PING s259 wedges in 56 and 60 degrees with Alta Blue regular flex shafts in them.”
  • BogeyTed: “I went from a Denali red to an MMT shaft. And it’s glorious.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
