Here’s what Bryson had to say on his self-built 5-iron after Masters opening round
One of the favorites for this week’s Masters tournament was Bryson DeChambeau, but a shocker of an opening round has him needing a mountain to climb if he’s to don the green jacket for the first time.
A disastrous triple-bogey on the 11th hole paved the way for an opening round of four-over par 76 for DeChambeau on Thursday, who played the first round with a 5-iron that he built himself with a 3D printer.
Following the disappointing 76, Bryson briefly spoke about the club build when asked by a reporter.
Asked how he hit the club on day one, Bryson responded “Good, it was great on 7,” before explaining the process saying: “Prints in eight hours. Machines, they’re three or four hours. Then you have to cut grooves in it and do a bunch of other stuff. So you can have something within a day and a half.”
Asked then if he would want to have more of the clubs in the bag for the weekend, Bryson responded: “Pffff… no. It has to be USGA conforming, it’s a whole process you have to go through.”

Bryson hit his 5-iron just once on Thursday, for his tee shot off the par-4 seventh hole.
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.
“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
