Why does Bryson DeChambeau have lead tape on top of his fairway wood at the Masters?
When it comes to equipment adjustments, Bryson DeChambeau is no stranger. On Monday at the Masters, he was spotted with lead tape on the top of his Krank Formula Fire fairway wood. While this method of weight adjustment is fairly uncommon, it has been seen over the years.

Regarding lead tape placement on top of the club, Patrick Boyd of National Custom explained that it takes 10 percent of the club head’s mass to shift the center of gravity. “Weight up high drops launch, not spin,” Boyd said. To me, it appears there isn’t enough weight here to significantly shift the center of gravity, but there is certainly enough lead tape to alter the club’s launch characteristics.
Lowering the launch while maintaining a strong ball flight is ideal for navigating the fairways of Augusta National, especially with its signature swirling winds. This adjustment should help the ball penetrate toward the target.
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.
“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

He wants the ball fleet to be lower, and he wants the head to not release as quickly.He wants to delay the release a little bit.
Putting weight on the toll of the club impedes the club from closing.
Conversely, if you’re a slicer, and you want the club face to close more easily, put lead tape on the heel.
