Inside Johnny Keefer’s surprising putter switch
Coming off his best finish on the PGA Tour, rookie Johnny Keefer is making a switch – again. He tees up at the Valero after finishing T3 at the Houston Open, helped by a putter change. The San Antonio native traded in a custom Piretti blade and transitioned into a mallet-style Scotty Cameron Phantom 9.2.
Now, at this hometown event, he’s surprisingly making another putter change, moving into a Scotty Cameron prototype 3.2 Phantom.
“Yeah, it’s not really much of a secret, the putter’s been really good in the past and just recently, you know, wasn’t quite working as well,” Keefer said Wednesday about the recent putter switches. “Just wanted to see something a little different just comfortability-wise. Probably the worst thing that I could do is go out on the course feeling uncomfortable with a putter.”
Keefer added more about switching again, “This week it’s going to be the same thing … Nothing’s set in my bag, nothing’s irreplaceable so far as you can see. Yeah, I think I’m making a lot of the right decisions just comfortability-wise on the greens.”
If there was ever a time to find some comfort on the greens, it would be the week before your Masters debut.
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.
“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
