The surprising equipment change 41-year-old Gary Woodland made

Published

on

Update: Woodland spoke about the shaft change following his second round, saying:

“Actually made an iron change, I switched shafts. Last week — I just haven’t hit it very well this year, iron play, driver’s been great. I’ve been tinkering a little bit. My speed is definitely back to where it’s been. The last couple years it was down and it’s back now. I switched back to an old iron shaft that I played forever and it tightened everything up. My misses were better today. It felt comfortable out there. That was really nice.”

Regarding whether he’s playing a stiffer shaft, Woodland said, “It is. It’s a shaft that I played all through ’18, ’19, I think ’15, ’16, ’17. I played it for a long time. Switched out of it last year just because my speed had dropped and I was trying to find something that was a little more forgiving. My speed’s back and I put those babies back in and it was nice.”

Gary Woodland made last week’s Tour Report, when we spotted his new Scotty Cameron GoLo putter, along with an interestingly designed offset wedge. Well, this week in Houston, he’s made another significant change.

Woodland swapped out his True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 shafts and returned to the KBS C-Taper 130 X iron shafts.

Why? Well, speaking with Cobra Director of Tour Operations Ben Schomin, despite Woodland’s age, he’s gaining speed. The 41-year-old leads the PGA Tour in Club Head Speed, averaging 127.68 mph so far this season. With that, the X100s were causing Woodland to dig the club at impact, with the club lagging behind due to his speed.

As a result, and some quick work from Schomin building up a mini-set from 7- to 9-iron in Woodland’s Cobra’s King MB, he was noticing shallower divots and better turf interaction, thanks to the C-Taper matching his delivery.

The fix is working. Woodland sits one back heading into the second round at Memorial Park.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
