Should you match your 5/7-wood to your driver?
In our forums, our members have been discussing the validity of matching their 5/7-woods to their driver. WRXer ‘timknoll’ kicks off the thread, saying:
“Going to be buying a GT2 driver and wanting to get a 5 and 7 wood instead of a 3 wood and any hybrids… Am I weird for just wanting to match the driver as far as company or should I try someone else??? Anyone with any recommendations for those fairway woods?”
And our members have been sharing their top tips and practises in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Mjtiger: “I personally like matching woods to driver unless there’s some specific reason to not do so, like the woods that year are particularly bad. I play a ping bag so haven’t run into that particular issue. Bag just looks cleaner to me, which is part of the fun of golf.”
- 3006Sprng: “Doesn’t really matter, play what works. Go try some stuff. My driver and 7 wood match by coincidence, but my 5 wood is a different brand.”
- jah7838: “I wouldn’t match for the sake of matching. If each wood happens to be the same line, that’s great, but sometimes a 5 wood will work better for one brand and a different model will be better for the 7 wood. My driver is a Qi10LS, current 5 wood is a Qi35 turned down 1 click, and the 7w is a Qi4D core model turned down to 20.5° because I hit it better than the Qi35 Tour. Shafts are different in both as well just because I want something different from each club.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Driver should be best fit for distance and control off the tee. 3/5/7 woods should match models and shafts for hitting off the deck/rough and 10g heavier than driver i.e 70g 3w, 80g 5w, 90g 7w.
