Spotted: Chris Gotterup with new custom TaylorMade Spider putter at Pebble Beach
Chris Gotterup is off the back of a massive victory at the WM Phoenix Open, where he defeated Hideki Matsuyama in a playoff to snatch the title away from the Japanese star.
The 26-year-old buried a lengthy birdie putt in the playoff with his TaylorMade Spider X Tour, but that hasn’t stopped Gotterup rocking up at Pebble Beach with a custom TaylorMade Spider featuring a very interesting detail.
As spotted by our tour photographer, extra material has been added to the toe of his Spider, with our man on the ground noting:
“Extra material was added on the underside at the toe, second putter is a reference to how the Spiders normally look toe side on the sole as Chris toe down putter and they wanted to keep the CG the same while adding more surface area for him to sole the putter.”

Here’s a few comments from our members in reaction to the interesting development, but make sure to check out the entire discussion (and more photos) and have your say at the link below.
- Scot0000: “Wild stuff. Thanks for the insight here.”
- newportbeach: “That’s some next level customization. Thanks for the pics and the insight. Love this type of stuff.”
- dragon43: “This is really cool and great thinking, but I can’t imagine it will go into competition given how he’s started this season, right?!”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
