The best golf balls for high swing speed players

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing golf balls for high swing speed players. WRXer ‘McCormack’ tees off the thread saying:

“This year is finally the year I want to test out new balls and see what best fits me. I’ve always been using TP5x since college golf, which has been almost 8 years ago now. I think it’s time for a change.

Looking for recommendations from anyone but specifically players with high swing and ball speed (180+ ball, 120+ swing) and what works best from them.”

And our members have been sharing the golf balls that have worked best for them in this category in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • vietnameeh: “The Triple Diamond has been really special for me. But its not for everyone especially maybe if you are looking for total control with wedges. I have been testing the new Bridgestone VS BLACK….its pretty good ball.”
  • ScooterMcTavish: “Speed is obviously lower than yours, but I do like a “non-rock” ball that spins less off the tee. Lot of good recommendations above, but thought it of value to point out the Chrome Tour has a lot in common with the Chrome Soft X LS. Feel is decent, and pretty good off driver, but firm enough not to cause a loss of ball speed.I did try a Z-Star Diamond the other day – might be worth adding into the “try” list.  A bit firm for my SS, may be better for you.”
  • storm3: “The TP5x is already on the low end of the spin spectrum so not many choices that will noticeably reduce spin. First thought would be the Maxfli Tour X which should provide a little more ball speed and cost substantially less.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
