Repurposing an older club as a mini driver

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing the prospect of repurposing an older driver as a mini driver. WRXer ‘MillRiverCaddy’ kicks off the thread saying:

“Any one refuse to pay 400+ for a mini driver? Anyone repurpose a club to act as a mini diver? If so what is the set up? Looking for ideas.”

And our members have been sharing their thoughts and experiences in response.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • NRJyzr: “Classic drivers around 300cc were designed with driver theory of the time.  Where that matters is CG placement, older drivers’ CG’s tend to be higher than what you’d find in a modern mini.  Tends to result in higher spin than modern sticks. They may also be tougher to hit off the deck, due again to CG. Ultimately, trying is the only way to *know*.”
  • seis: “I had a TM SLDR head with a 14 degree loft and 420 cc head size sitting in my little used club barrel. When the mini driver craze took off awhile back I purchased a 3 wood shaft for it and added some lead tape to the club head. It proved to be pretty accurate but of course I lost probably 15 to 20 yards off the tee. It was a fun cheap experiment though.”
  • BRGT: “The first thing that comes to mind for me, if you really want to go cheap, is a good condition 10.5 or 11.5 degree driver from the early 2000’s. You can find some solid drivers from that era that have max COR (I think 2003ish is when most drivers started hitting that COR). The caveat is they may be a challenge to hit off the deck (if you want that) compared to a true mini, and they take more work to re-shaft if that is needed. (I say 10.5 or 11.5 degrees for older driver heads because that is typically the highest loft they made).”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
