What are the fewest amount of clubs I can bring to a golf course and still have fun?
In our forums, our members have been helping a WRXer out who is heading to Mexico this Christmas and wants to bring few golf clubs but still have fun on the course. WRXer ‘TallLeftHack’ kicks off the thread, saying:
“My in-laws have a place in Mexico near a golf course that I’m going down to for Christmas. They have some clubs that live there but I’m a lefty so want to bring my own for now and future years.
I’m wondering what the least amount of clubs I can bring that will still make golf fun. The way I see it if I just had a driver, a 7, a sand wedge and a putter I’d get frustrated pretty quick. I’m 35, 18 cap and hit the ball decently far but obviously erratically. I think I just need something off the tee, then maybe a 7, 9 and two wedges (+ putter)? Would love to hear opinions.
I know this is similar to the minimalist golf thread but I guess I’m trying to find where it stops being as fun vs where it impacts scores (not as picky about that).”
And our members have been sharing their top suggestions in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- SammyShaf: “I would choose clubs that allow me to cover the carry yardage of par 3s from the tee box you will play from. Then, a tee club, wedge, and putter. Bonus points for picking them up secondhand from non matching sets of cult classics and beating full bag folks as you’ll be relaxed and experience “I shot my best round with rentals” story that pops up all the time.”
- Mobert19: “If I had to bring some clubs I’d just bring all of them. What’s the big deal?”
- Dustdevil: “Driver, 5W, 4i, 6i, 8i, PW, SW, Putter or…Driver, 3H, 5i, 7i, 9i, PW or GW, SW, Putter. Depending on the length of courses you play.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
