Golf gifts for the big spender

Published

on

The holidays are upon us again, GolfWRX members, so let the daydreaming begin, as we fill our lists with the golf gear we want this holiday season.

As is true every year, the gifts in the Holiday Gift Guide ideas will suit any budget, and each item was hand-picked by our staff. We’re again presenting our guide as a series as we did in years past, targeting “the purist,” “the gearhead,” “the value seeker,” “the golfer looking to improve,” “the stylish golfer,” and “the big spender.”

Here are our best recommendations for the big spender in your life.

Artisan irons

Forged from Japanese S20 carbon steel, Artisan irons are hand-crafted by Mike Taylor and his team. Mike has long been known as an icon in the club world, creating and building for some of the best players in the world, including Tiger Woods — you might have heard of him. Iron builds start at $360 per club, and you can customize a whole lot. In-person fitting down in Texas would be best and the Artisan crew can grind and stamp your set to fit your swing perfectly. Artisan offers a Muscle Back, Half Cavity, and Full Cavity option that you can mix and match for the perfect blended set.

Louis Vuitton Golf Bag

There are endless golf bags for different uses and styles, but I think few will rival the Louis Vuitton model. The best part for me is that the description on the website was clearly written by someone who doesn’t golf. Monogram-coated canvas with natural cowhide leather trim creates a cart-style bag with what looks like 5 pockets. The zippers and hardware are only gold colored. I was hoping for real gold at this price. A matching rain cover is included, along with 3 LV monogrammed golf balls, 4 tees, and a matching towel!

Custom Built Home Simulator

Building your own simulator for your home or office is the dream of just about every golfer. The nice thing is that you don’t have to spend SUV money to get something accurate and useful, but if your budget is endless, then so are the possibilities. I built one up with TrackMan, an Epson 4k Laser Projector, upgraded screen, and a full enclosure that would be my perfect golf spot for the long winter months.

Mitchell Golf TourGauge Digital Iron Machine

Tinkering with your own golf clubs is a great way to get them dialed in perfectly for your swing and game. Adjusting the loft and lie on your own ensures that your specs are perfect and always ready for your next round. Mitchell recently added the option of a large LED display to its legendary bending machine. The TourGauge Digital handles both right and left-handed clubs and comes with a sturdy floor-mounted stand. Make sure to add the tour-validated Steelclub Brass Bending Bar for an additional $350 that won’t mark up those soft forged hosels! I put this on my list every year, and Santa hasn’t brought it. I must be on that naughty list.

PuttView M20 Putting Green

If you have the space and budget, I don’t think there is a cooler putting green out there. The M20 is 20 feet long and 8 feet wide with the ability to articulate in order to produce an infinite number of breaking putts. Their integrated software will show you a wild level of putt and green detail on the tablet and projected lines right on the green from an overhead projector. Putt Test is a combined style package that will help you find your putting weaknesses, and the statistics module will give you tips and drills to improve.

FootJoy DryJoys Select LX Rain Suit

FootJoy describes this as the ultimate in rain protection with a 3-layer waterproof fabric. This fabric has fully bonded seams but is also breathable to regulate temperature and keep you comfortable. Small details are everywhere with StaDry Select collar, DrySeal LX neck cinch, and grip sleeve to put your club grip in-between shots so it doesn’t get wet. The pants have a non-slip adjustable waistband and easy-access zippers for a perfect fit and accessibility. FootJoy also provides a 2-year waterproof warranty on both pieces.

Tommy Ball Golf PT78 Platinum Putter

I have no idea if this is an actual thing, as the website looks a little interesting and there are very few photos for a company selling a $27,000 putter. The head is a classic Newport/Anser style, but I can’t tell if it has more rounded or squared off bumpers. A very thick plumber’s neck is attached, and you can see a pretty traditional milling pattern on the face. Tommy Ball describes the feel of a platinum putter as being solid and perfect, but I am curious how different or similar it would be to steel. There is also no mention of shaft and grip options!

Byrne GyroDial Golf Limited Edition Watch

John Byrne started out repairing watches before launching his own brand 30 years ago. This golf limited edition was first presented in 2024 and features cubes at the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions containing golf equipment images. The cubes are rotated using the mechanical movement in the watch to display a golf ball, driver, iron, wedge, putter, and classic Roman Numerals. Inside the 41m steel case is a self-winding movement that is made in-house, offering 60 hours of power reserve. A green rubber strap holds the GyroDial on your wrist until your tee time.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
