How to go about self fitting for irons the cheapest way?
In our forums, our members have been responding to a self fitting project. WRXer ‘edutch22’ is a 2.5 handicap golfer that is looking to self fit themselves for irons, and kicks off the thread saying:
“I am over going too fittings, the results just never translate to the golf course for me. This winter months here in NY, im on a project to self fit myself for everything, im a 2.5 cap, was in the golf business for a little while so I have some basic club fitting knowledge.
My question is how would one go about self fitting for irons the cheapest way?”
And our members have been sharing their thoughts and advice in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- MattM97: “Unless you have access to a fitting studio where you can use everything I dont think there is a cheap way. A lot of guys here buy, build, rebuild, test, sell until they find something they like.”
- Nessism: “Evolution, not revolution. First, benchmark your current clubs. Shaft weight? Do you like the feel? Trajectory? Head shape and size? Head impact feel? Define everything you like, and what you want to change. Most low cap guys can play any heads, and yes, that includes GI shovels. It’s mostly a matter of preference. When picking your next step, make a logical evolution of where you are now, and where you want to be in the future. It’s trial and error. Massive bonus points if you have the equipment and knowledge to do your own building. If you don’t, learning how would be my first recommendation.”
- Pepperturbo: “Only one formal fitting many years ago. I have self-fit for years. Be forewarned, it’s expensive process. You have to have the funds to spend on testing shafts and an eye to measure down range result, know what to look for in trajectory, be able to identify spin behavior as good or not so, and have the patience for the process. Having said that, fitting steel shafts IME are much easier than fitting graphite. There are many steel shafts, but steel shafts IMO are simple comparatively, making it easier to decide on one; not the same in graphite.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
