Has a mini-driver kicked your 3-wood out of the bag?
In our forums, our members have been discussing mini drivers. WRXer ‘opensupoverthere27’ kicks off the thread while considering dropping his 3-wood for a mini driver, saying:
“Been going back and forth over here about potentially dropping by 3-wood from the bag and throwing in a GT280. How does it perform off the deck? 3-wood has been my worst club in the bag for a while and it would be a nice tee option when I need to hit something 30-40 yards less than driver.
Appreciate any insight!”
And our members have been sharing their insights in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Ger21: “My mini kicked the driver and 3-wood out of the bag. On average, I hit it as far as driver. And I replaced my 3-wood with a 5-wood, which is as long as my 3-wood, and much easier off the deck.
- BombinJim: “I took my 3W out of my bag and put in a mini. I struggle to hit a fade with any club so I have made my mini super fade biased and I setup for a mega slice feel (for me), which makes it the go-to fade club. I could not do that with a 3W and I like my driver to be setup for what feels natural to me. I keep a 5W in my bag and that is a 250-260 club at sea level. Generally I have to really screw up the tee shot to need more than a 5W on any approach, and if that happens I don’t mind hitting the mini off the deck.”
- pnwpingi210: “Yup. Burner and now r7. Best club in the bag.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

I added a mini (13.5) use it only for T-off around 240-260 y. when tight fairway and avoid obstacles. Driver at 9, hit it around 270-280 y. Replace FW3 at 15 with FW4 at 16.5 for both T-off and fairway around 230-240 y. Hybrid 3 at 18 for 200-220 y. But needed to sacrifice some wedge so, I carry 51 and 58.
