I don’t understand how tour guys play this thing if it spins that much!? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing how to get the most out of the 7-wood. WRXer ‘JLP_Golf’ recently picked up a Callaway Elyte TD 7-wood with a Ventus Velo Black+ shaft, but is struggling to make it work for him, saying:

“I cannot get numbers even close to my UW in the same loft (shorter by 25 yards of carry) or even my same lofted 4-iron (shorter by 15-20 yards carry).  It just spins so much.  Do I need to add weight/hotmetal to this thing?  I don’t understand how tour guys play this thing if it spins that much – granted they don’t “need this distance” but with how much this is spinning I can’t see it working for gapping.  I feel like I’m missing something.

For reference i’ve got plenty of speed (driver 118 and 7i 95mph).  Carrying 21 deg UW 235 and my zx7 4i around 220 but my average carry with the 7-wood is like 205 (shorter than my 5i kinda).  Please help!”

And our members have been sharing their thoughts and suggestions in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • dsmil: “You might just be a fast and higher spin player, who gets along better with the less-spinny UW and 4-iron. A 5-wood might get you into more comparable launch conditions to the UW than the 7-wood does.”
  • Frank Newport: “In my experience, 7-woods don’t work for high speed high spin players on windy courses. The UW, on the other hand, is god’s gift to such players. I’ve also found Ping G440 hybrids to have similar ball flights to the UW at a much cheaper price when you factor in upgrade shafts.”
  • pnwpingi210: “My guess is your very steep/high dynamic loft and very high spin.  7-woods are going to launch high and spin a bunch for those players. I’m similar swing speed and a 7-wood goes about 245 carry for me. An Apex UW would fly 5-10 further due to lower spin/flatter flight.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
