General advice on upgrading irons – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing upgrading irons. WRXer ‘Risty72’ has progressed from a 23 handicap to a 12 this year using game improvement Cleveland XL launcher irons “from a few years ago,” and is now looking to switch up clubs.

‘Risty72’ asks:

“My question is should I mainly be looking at players distance irons or should I open the search to more of a player’s iron as well?”

And our members have been sharing their suggestions and wisdom in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • philly2kuk: “Find a good fitter and let them fit you with no preconceptions. I have a fitter I trust and he always does a good job. I went in last year expecting titleist irons but came out with TaylorMade as they were head and shoulders above the rest for my game.”
  • Socrates: “I won’t tell you what clubs to buy, but I will tell you what not to do.  DON’T sell your existing set until you are absolutely sure that your new irons are better than what you have.  Nothing worse than a month after the placebo effect is over and you realize you can’t hit the new irons as well.”
  • tleader: “I’d look at outdoor fitting options. Well worth a drive and investment into a fitting this way. Don’t chase distance, you’ve made great strides and improvements, now it’s time to focus on consistency and minimizing misses. Is an extra 5 yards worth a less playable trajectory, or worse dispersion? I’d suggest looking at the most forgiving iron you can look down at and feel confident, then focus on key metrics for scoring: peak height, landing angle, dispersion.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
