Carrying a club just for one shot? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing the merits of carrying a club just for one specific shot. WRXer ‘Naptime’ kicks off the thread, saying:
“At my retirement age I removed the 3-wood from the bag and added a 5-wood and a 7-wood. But there is a longer par 3 on my home course for which the 3-wood from a tee saves me a stroke just about every time compared to any other club.
So I put the 3-wood back in just so I have it for that hole. I leave out one of my hybrids and carry four woods just for that course. Anyone else have a similar experience with club selection?”
And our members have been sharing their thoughts in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Warrior42111: “Could argue my 60 degree. It really only comes out if the bunkers are hard packed or I have a tight lie where I have to carry a trap or hazard.”
- coreyhr: “I added a Qi10 Tour 6-wood for just one tee shot at our course that is a sharp dog leg in which your ball lands on a downslope (it’s a badly designed hole). It’s now possibly my favorite club in the bag and one I reach for over my 4-wood if the lie is even somewhat suspect and contact is in question.”
- kwcsports: “Yes I do. Mid 80’s Ping Eye 2 SW 58 deg (pictured above). I only use it out of the sand and it’s the best sand club I’ve ever hit. I’ll be buried with it haha.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
