TaylorMade announces MG5 wedges for 2025
Today, TaylorMade has officially launched its Milled Grind 5 (MG5) wedge family, which the company is calling a major leap forward in short-game technology.
We saw the TaylorMade Proto wedge design on tour, followed by MG5 heads, so it’s not surprising to hear TaylorMade emphasizing MG5 wedges were designed with input from tour professionals. Per a press release, the MG5 line is built to deliver forged feel, enhanced spin, and offers a wide array of grind options to suit any swing or playing condition, leveraging hallmark TaylorMade technology as well as new innovations.
“Inspired by some feedback from Collin Morikawa, we set out to make the best feeling wedge TaylorMade has ever created. The best players will tell you having great feel around the greens is critical to having confidence in your short game…and to have the best feeling wedge, it needs to be forged.” – Matt Bovee, Director of Product Creation – Iron and Wedge

A word on tour adoption: Per TaylorMade, 16 players had MG5 wedges in the bag at last week’s Wyndham Championship. Players with an MG5 wedge in the bag currently include Collin Morikawa, Ben Griffin, and Tommy Fleetwood.
TaylorMade MG5 wedges: What’s new
Fully forged for premium feel
- First MG wedge ever to be fully forged from soft carbon steel
- Produces exceptional feel and feedback on short shots
- Forging process ensures consistency in shape, weight, and performance
New saw-milled grooves
- More aggressive, sharper grooves created via saw-milling
- Pushes groove geometry closer to the USGA’s legal limit
- Produces more spin than previous MG generations

Designed for spin retention in wet conditions
- Raw face finish plus Spin Tread Technology redirects water
- Acts like all-weather tires (maintains spin and control in the rain)
- Retains 13-percent more spin in wet conditions vs. MG4
Additionally, TaylorMade highlights the MG5’s refined leading-edge curvature and updated top-line blend, which were inspired by Collin Morikawa’s feedback.

MG5 wedge grinds
MG5 features six tour-inspired grinds designed by TaylorMade wedge craftsman Greg Cesario. Each caters to different swing types and turf conditions:

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
