Success with cavity back wedges? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing cavity back wedges. WRXer ‘Bigjim1022’ is considering moving to a cavity back wedge and kicks off the thread saying:

“These seem to be pretty popular these days, and while I’m not considering one for my SW and LW I am thinking about one for my Gap wedge.  Currently using a 50° RTX 6 which I like well enough.  Chipping it’s pretty decent but full shots I’m hit or miss with it, and I use it more on full shots.

Has anybody had success going to one of these wedges, and if so, I’d love to hear your thoughts?”

And our members have been sharing their thoughts in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Lord helmet: “I have an iron set GW at 49*.  Mizuno hot metal pro.  I only use that club for full shots so it makes sense to me to have some forgiveness there.  I start with specialty wedges at 53/57/61 for everything else.  I dont miss having a Vokey or other wedge in that spot to be honest.”
  • kmay_: “I play the CBX in 52, and 58. Rarely hit full shots with wedges, sometimes with the 52 I’ll hit it full, and as a chronic toe striker, they are certainly more forgiving than the Mizuno mpt5s I had been playing previous. But they are quite drastically at different ends of the spectrum those two. My 52 is a workhorse, I hit that sucker more than any club and love it.”
  • hammergolf: “My wedge game is by far the strength of my game. I carry Cleveland CBX Zipcore 50, 56, and 60 wedges. Flat out, the most consistent wedges I’ve ever played. Toe side strikes literally fly almost the same distance. These have the tightest dispersion of any wedges I’ve used. HIGHLY recommend.”

I switched to cavity back wedges in my 50 and 54 for exactly the same reason. Use the 50 for full swings only, and the 54 is probably about 85% full swings. Now if I could actually chip I’d be good at this game.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
