Toulon Golf announces latest Small Batch putter — the Charlotte

Published

on

The Story

Per Toulon:

“Charlotte, North Carolina is considered to be the “Home of NASCAR” and is the central hub for the sport and home to the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Many of the sport’s teams and performance machine shops call Charlotte home. What’s the connection between milled putters and stock car racing? The tolerances needed in racing to eke out every bit of performance is unbelievably intense. The slimmest margins can make the biggest difference in the pursuit of victory. The accumulation of tiny advancements lead to measurable improvements on the racetrack. Milling putters is very much the same way.

“When designing Charlotte Small Batch — like all the Small Batch creations that preceded it — Toulon operate at the intersection of art and science. When creating Charlotte, we wanted to stay true to the design DNA of the original B60 design, but also wanted it to perform better than ever before.

“That requires an intense amount of engineering and an artistic blend of every nuance to make the putter beautiful but also sound and feel in a way this shape has never felt before. The desire to create better performance drove us to the spirit of NASCAR, Charlotte.”

The Head

The putter head is inspired by the legendary B60 — a putter used to win majors and tour events the world over, and an overlooked design in the history of the game.

During the creation process, Toulon focused on the unique “B” flange design, but more significantly on its thickness. This area of the flange plays a major role in the creation of the putter’s sound and feel.  By thickening the flange it produces a deeper, more satisfying classic milled click.

The brand also designed the head to a weight of 355 grams, substantially heavier than the original. This allowed to be able to thicken the face and create the acoustics Toulon sought.

Sculpted from 904L, the final shape is clean and simple. But the closer you look, the more complexities will emerge. Toulon’s new Platinum Mist finish highlights the subtleties and brings a rare level of elegance to this classic.

Charlotte is a slightly longer and wider design than the brand’s other blades. These proportions are meticulously designed in order to create a visual harmony while maintaining the flowing organic shape that is designed to set this putter apart from other blades.

The Sole

The sole celebrates the legend of the vaunted Plymouth Superbird, a car so dominating with its superior aerodynamics in 1970 that it was effectively sidelined the next year, as rules changed to limit its advantages.

Toulon then slow milled the 904L, leaving the micro mill marks under the engraved car graphic, while adding just a touch of Racing Red to paint fill the name Charlotte.

In addition, the Charlotte Small Batch is milled with a Ultra Fine Double Fly Cut. Charlotte is designed for the modern game, weighing in at a contemporary 355 grams. Toulon paired it with a special Toulon Pistol Midsize grip in a Candy Red color with their black stepless steel shaft.

The finish of the new Platinum Mist PVD over the incredibly high polished and slow milled 904L aims to bring a finish depth without any glare. The headcover is inspired by the many advertisements adorning iconic stock cars on the grid.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
