How to choose the perfect mini-driver? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members are having a deep discussion on mini-drivers. WRXer ‘Brentwood’ kicks off the thread with an interesting question:

“My question to all you mini-driver users and especially those that are purchasing new offerings this year, did you decide which model to purchase based on intended use? For example, assuming brand agnostic, would you lean towards the Callaway if it was purely for an off the tee option? I am eager to hear your thoughts on how you decided your setup as well as overall comparisons.”

And our members have been sharing their thoughts in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Steuner: “I was using the Aeroburner Mini TP in 14 Degree over a few years. Did try the 300Mini and the OO in between but none of them could push the Aeroburner out of the Bag. I sometimes tried to Hit it off the deck on very perfect lies, but this is rare and I have a very hot 5 wood turned down to 17 Degree. Last end of season sale a Cally AI mini driver found the way into my hands. and this stick is better in performance and dispersion than my Aeroburner.”
  • ThomasM: “My decision came down to wanting a smaller driver, not a big 3 wood. I had the AI Smoke 340 Mini and switched to the Elyte when it was released. My gapping is Driver, Mini, 4 wood, 7 wood. The distance I see with my 4 wood off the deck makes the Elyte Mini a tee club only, and about 20 yards behind my driver.”
  • Fairways_And_Greens: “I hit the PXG secret weapon or whatever it is called. It was amazingly easy to hit off the deck.”
  • SmashGolfBall: “I have a TM mini 300 and like it a lot. Compared to the 3W, it is more stable and forgiving when hitting off the tee. From the deck, I only use it when the lie is good, and I find no issue with launching the ball. Playing it with a 41.5-inch length to get its distance gapping between the driver and the hybrid.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
