TRK-R golf balls: TaylorMade announces launch monitor-enabled TP5, TP5x versions
Titleist is no longer the only player in the radar-enabled golf ball space. Today, TaylorMade announced TRK-R golf balls — AKA launch monitor-enabled versions of its TP5 and TP5x balls.
How did TaylorMade engineers make the company’s flagship golf ball more trackable? Silver.
That’s right, TaylorMade embedded a small amount of liquid silver, which emits reflective waves, beneath the TP5/TP5x urethane cover in a “nonsymmetrical infinity pattern.” This makes it easier for launch monitors to capture data accurately.

“Radar based launch monitors can be one of the largest investments in the game. Ensuring that these units are providing accurate information to the golfer or fitters is just as important as providing top performance,” said Mike Fox, Global Senior Category Director for Golf Balls at TaylorMade.
The company highlighted its commitment to fitting, emphasizing how TRK-R golf balls work in tandem with the SelectFit technology (built-in fitting markers) in Qi35 drivers.
Also worth stating: The liquid silver has no impact on performance and the golf balls are USGA conforming.
TP5 and TP5x TRK-R will retail for $64.99 at TaylorMadeGolf.com. The balls will be available for fittings at certified TaylorMade fitting locations, beginning January 23.
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.
“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
