Spotted: New UST Mamiya LIN-Q Prototype wood shaft
We have seen a lot of new equipment on tour in Hawaii this week! Let’s take a look at a new shaft from UST Mamiya. What you are looking at here is a new UST Mamiya Lin-Q Prototype that was out at the Sony Open this week. It seems like we keep seeing more and more Lin-Q shafts on tour each week. This new one has some interesting markings we can speculate on without UST releasing any details yet.

The first marking on this new Lin-Q shaft is down near the tip where it says “Power Core” as that is not something I have seen on a Lin-Q shaft yet. From the little UST Mamiya is saying right now, the Power Core is a new technology that uses a stronger carbon fiber material to create added stability while still helping produce ball speed. Power Core is used to control spin and launch consistency so stronger golfers don’t see big changes in either parameter on shots that aren’t hit dead center. The shaft is a prototype right now on tour so the Power Core is only in the 6 TX, 7 TX, and 8 TX models.

Near the middle of the shaft, there look to be some rectangles that are mostly empty, or not filled with paint, while four of them are solid white. From the pictures, this is a launch and spin chart that is built right into the graphics of the shaft. Seeing that only two rectangles are filled for both “launch” and “spin” we are assuming this is a low launch and spin profile. I think it would be very cool to have that graphic right on the shaft to inform golfers and fitters what the shaft should do.

This shaft also has “PROTO V1” after the weight and flex on the shaft designating as the first version of this shaft, but are there any other versions? If it is marked as V1 we have to assume that there is a V2, V3, etc. out there somewhere? Will we see more of these new Lin-Q shafts out on tour? I guess only time will tell.
The graphics are mostly dark ion and white and the current UST Mamiya Lin-Q M40X White model is a low/mid launch and low/mid spin shaft. There is also a Lin-Q M40X Black TSPX that is low launch and spin, so where does this new shaft fall in the lineup? Only time will tell!

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
