PXG’s Desert Club helps get you out of trouble and keeps your irons safe
We have all hit that wayward shot into a lie where rocks and other natural elements could make a permanent negative impact on our golf club. The desert can be especially brutal on the soft metal our irons are made out of, leaving unsightly scratches and gouges on our precious tools. And let’s be honest, golf clubs are not cheap; no one wants to inflict any damage on their set. With this in mind, PXG went ahead and built the unique Desert Club to take that abuse.
The Desert Club is a little bit of a Frankenstein build in that is the length of an 8-iron (36.5 inches) but has the loft of a pitching wedge (44 degrees). This combination gives the golfer versatility to use it in any way they see fit, from any lie they might encounter. Instead of taking a drop from that rocky lie, you can pull the Desert Club out and take an aggressive swing in order to get back into play. The longer length helps generate club head speed and the added loft allows you to elevate the shot over the obstacles in your way. PXG even created a sole with mid-bounce to allow the player to manipulate the face in order to escape such bad lies and get the ball in play or on the green.
To create a club that can take the beating, PXG engineers went with a hardened 17-4 stainless steel for the head as it is significantly harder than traditional steels used in iron heads. After the head has been made they leave it as a natural stainless steel finish so the scratches and gouges will blend in better and keep the head looking good for many, many shots.

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.
“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Fun fact left out of this article. If you’re from Arizona, you know this…
Many clubs in Arizona allow a 15th club that can be designated as a club to be played from native areas. Usually, it’s an old wedge. This is just marketing for exactly that, and frankly it’s like an inside joke / gag.
But the reason this is a thing is that it’s literally accepted as part of the routine in the desert. Without knowing about the 15th club exemption, most people reading this would be confused.
