‘One set of irons for the rest of your days….What you bagging?’ – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been deciding what irons they would play for the rest of their days if they were forced to choose. WRXer ‘PARETO’ kicks off the thread saying:
“Let’s just say you were forced at gun point to choose 1 set of irons to last you until the end of time. This set needed to take into account you current game but also your game as you “age”. This sets needs to cover you on any style course you will ever play and you can NEVER change.
Me? I’m going Ping Gxxx. Maybe not the current 400/410/425/430 springy faced stuff but for sure G5-G30 era. Mini tanks that you could drag behind your car, then go play on any club and at any level.
Curious what others feel could be a 1 and done iron? Like that would EVER happen at WRX but I got time to kill….”
And our members have been choosing their clubs and explaining why in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- 9ClubberLang: “Ping G30. I’ve owned these for only a few weeks but they are perfect.”
- jwhite86: “Probably Miura TC-201… even if my game went south, at least my irons would be gorgeous.”
- Archimedes65: “My i230s. Love them so much I just bought a second set. I imagine that I’ll play them until the end of my golfing days.”
- bogeyk: “Ping Zing2 for me. Super forgiving and I could flight them low or high when needed. The 52 degree sand wedge was a weapon for me.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
