Spotted: Bettinardi Hexperimental Prototype putters
Like most weeks out on tour, the putting green is full of cool and new putters being tested by the word’s best players. This week we spotted a few prototype mallets from Bettinardi that look to have a decent amount of custom options for the player.
The mallets are called Hexperimental, playing off the hexagon that is so iconic in Bettinardi logos. We don’t have anything official on the putters from Bettinardi but we can speculate from what we see on each one. I would guess that the face section on each putter is milled from steel in order to get the weight up and dial in the feel. Aluminum would be my guess as the rear section material as Bettinardi is a master at machining it from their vast Inovai line up.
This first prototype’s matte black finish hides the face milling but it looks to be very shallow or even smooth. A short slant neck appears on this model for some added toe-hang and half-shaft offset. The top has triple site lines installed, a short one in the center and then two long lines to frame the ball.

Prototype #2 has a nice matte silver finish on the front and a darker grey on the rear mallet section. Like the first model this has the same site line configuration but the lines are filled with black paint. A short post hosel mates with a single bend shaft for half-shaft offset but it is probably closer to face balanced. The face of the putter is milled smooth for a more crisp feel and audible sound.

The final prototype is goes with the short post hosel and single bend shaft like the previous one. A matter black finish is applied here as well, but we can see Bettinardi’s Roll Control face has been milled into this one. Roll Control was developed by Bettinardi to get the ball rolling with less hopping and skidding while giving the golfer a softer feel. A long, single site line has been milled onto the top of this putter for alignment.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
